FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What age should my dog be before I can begin to use the Guidance Trainer?
    • The Guidance Trainer is a teaching device, so as long as the dog is old enough to learn and can carry the weight of the receiver collar it is okay to use our device.
  • What is the average time needed to train a dog with Guidance Trainer?
    • Training time differs from dog to dog. The breed type and the training discipline you are trying to teach also plays a role in how long it will take.
  • How tight should the collar strap be around my dog’s neck?
    • The proper collar strap fit is just gently snug, and placed right behind the dog’s ears.
  • Is it okay to cut the collar strap down in size?
    • After you have determined the proper collar strap fit, it is okay to trim off the excess with a pair of scissors. Be sure to leave extra length to accommodate for the future growth of your dog.
  • My dog’s hair is long will I need extra long contact points?
    • The surface area that rests against the dog’s neck was designed such that long hair would have a place to lay and still provide proper fit.  After purchase, first, make sure you have the collar strap snug enough and right behind the dog’s ears.  If the collar strap is too loose, you will not be making contact to the dog’s skin – one additional hole tightness may solve the problem. However, we do have longer contact points available as an accessory item if needed.
  • Can I use my unit in the water?
    • Both the transmitter and receiver are designed to be waterproof.
  • What is the life span of the rechargeable batteries?
    • Safe to say 3-5 years – with and under proper care and charging technique.
  • If a transmitter or receiver are lost. Can I replace either or both?
    • Yes, transmitters and receivers are replaceable call 866.795.7387 and ask for a Customer Service representative.
  • How do I know which stimulation level setting to use?
    • Always start with the adjustable stimulation knob set at level 1.  Then with the collar attached to your dog, press the top button on the transmitter.  If the dog feels this level of vibration stimulation he will stop whatever he is doing and look around trying to figure out what this new sensation is.  If you do not get this reaction move to the next level, but only move one level at a time as no over-reaction from the dog is appropriate (this rule also applies for the electrical impulse stimulation.)
  • How do I “mate” the “Add-A-2nd Dog collar” receiver to the transmitter?
    • It is very simple - review the Owners Manual page 11 or the insert card that came with the Add-a-2nd Dog package or call 866.795.7387 and ask for a Customer Service representative.
  • How many days of work can I get out of a fully charged unit?
    • For up to 48 hours of turn-on time whether continuous or one month.
  • Can the Ni-MH batteries be “reconditioned”? If so, how?
    • No – Use them and then discard (reason for customer replacement design).  They are not like Ni-cads, wherein you could cycle Ni-cads by discharge/recharge
  • Should I charge my collar after every use?
    • It is not a problem, but generally you should recharge your unit when you see the low battery light blinking.
The transmitter LED will start flashing for 30 seconds after the release of any of its activator buttons.
The receiver LED will change from a single Red blink to a double Red blink.
  • What should I do before putting the Guidance Trainer in storage for the season?
    • Wash it in tap water removing debris and other contaminates, then cycle through one fresh recharge, and store.
  • Why the long (4”) antenna when other devices have a much smaller (2”) antenna?
    • It is called “robust in design”.   Advertised range and actual working range around a dog’s neck has typically been two different terms.  We pride ourselves with over 90% POI or Point of Intercept with our design and our advertised range.
  • May I use the Guidance Trainer upon receipt?
    • We suggest a full 12 hour charge before using.
  • My transmitter and/or receiver don’t seem to be holding a charge?
    • Verify that your wall socket is not connected to a switch and is unintentionally turning off and interrupting the power to the charger.
